Rainstorm Wreaks Havoc in Damongo; Residents Appeal for Urgent Support

A torrential one-hour downpour has left a trail of destruction in parts of Damongo and its surrounding communities, particularly Canteen and Kpiri, displacing several residents and destroying homes, public facilities, and critical road infrastructure.

The heavy rainstorm, which occurred unexpectedly, ripped off roofs, destroyed properties, and rendered many families homeless. Among the affected structures are the Kpiri School, the Old Kpiri CHPS compound, and sections of the road leading to Kpiri, which have suffered significant damage, making movement in the area difficult.

Several residents are now counting their losses after the disaster. One of the victims, George from Kpiri, lost his home when the roof of his newly constructed house was completely ripped off by the violent storm.

Another victim, Mr. N-yaaba, a resident of Canteen, has been forced to relocate his family after the roof of their three-bedroom apartment was blown away by the rainstorm, leaving the building exposed and unsafe for habitation.

However, one of the most heartbreaking stories is that of Madam Adjoah, a mother of five whose husband is visually impaired. The family lives in a single-room structure which served as their only shelter. The powerful winds accompanying the rainstorm swept away the roof of their room, leaving the vulnerable family exposed to the harsh weather.

In tears, Madam Adjoah narrated her ordeal, explaining that the destroyed roof was the only protection she and her children had. With her husband unable to work due to his condition, the family now faces an uncertain future as they struggle to find a place to sleep.

Other affected residents have also reported losing personal belongings, household items, and food supplies to the rainstorm, deepening their hardship.

The victims are therefore appealing to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency, Samuel Abu Jinapor, as well as other relevant authorities, benevolent individuals, and humanitarian organizations to come to their aid with emergency relief items such as roofing sheets, mattresses, food, and temporary shelter.

Residents say the assistance is urgently needed to help the affected families rebuild their lives and prevent further suffering, especially as the rainy season approaches.

Community members have also called on local authorities to intensify public education on disaster preparedness and encourage stronger building structures to withstand storms.

The situation serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that extreme weather conditions can have on vulnerable communities. As Ghana gradually enters the peak of the rainy season, residents are urging individuals, households, and authorities to take precautionary measures to minimize the effects of such disasters.

For now, the affected families in Canteen and Kpiri remain hopeful that their cries for help will reach the appropriate authorities and that swift support will be provided to help them rebuild their homes and restore a sense of normalcy to their lives.
