MTN Ghana Marks 30 Years, Announces $1.1bn Network Investment as it Engages Northern Media Stakeholders

Tamale — MTN Ghana has announced plans to invest US$1.1 billion over the next three years to expand and strengthen its network infrastructure, as the telecommunications giant marked 30 years of operations in the country at a Regional Media and Stakeholder Engagement forum held in Tamale on Friday 14th August 2026 for the Northern, Savannah, Upper East and North East regions.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Emmanuel Afutu of MTN Ghana said the company would invest approximately US$380 million in 2026 alone to improve network capacity, service quality and infrastructure resilience. As part of this drive, MTN is rolling out 80 new cell sites across the four regions; 38 in the Northern Region, 17 in Savannah, 14 in Upper East, and 11 in the North East contributing to a nationwide total of 500 new sites.

Mr. Afutu said MTN Ghana now connects more than 32 million subscribers nationwide and remains a key driver of the country’s digital transformation, three decades after launching with the modest ambition of simply “connecting people.”

The company reported robust growth for the first half of 2026, with service revenue rising 32.3% to GH¢15.0 billion and EBITDA up 47.1% to GH¢9.3 billion, with margins improving to 61.8%. Profit after tax grew 46.8% to GH¢5.1 billion. MTN Ghana also disclosed that it paid GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes, alongside GH¢384.7 million in fees and levies, during the same period.

Mobile Money continued to be a major growth driver, with transaction value up 44.4% year-on-year, active users up 3.1%, and both transaction volumes and MoMo revenue rising 23.3%.

Mr. Afutu highlighted the work of the MTN Ghana Foundation, including the MTN Skills Academy, which aims to equip over 100,000 Ghanaian youth with digital skills, and the Bright Scholarship Scheme, which has supported more than 1,200 students with fees and equipment such as laptops.

He also pointed to the company’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme, under which MTN employee volunteers worked with schools across all sixteen regions this year. In the four northern regions represented at the forum, volunteers were engaged at Zogbeli Cluster Block A JHS (Northern Region), Damongo Girls Model School (Savannah Region), Walewale Catholic School (North East Region), and Bolgatanga Preparatory Model School (Upper East Region). Health screening exercises were also carried out at facilities including Sawla District Hospital and Anigazanga Hospital.

Under its reimagined Heroes of Change initiative, MTN said it has increased its overall winner’s prize from GH¢100,000 to GH¢400,000, with category winners now receiving GH¢200,000 each and every finalist taking home GH¢100,000.

Mr. Afutu used the occasion to thank media partners, regulators, customers and communities across the country for what he described as three decades of “partnership, patience, and candid counsel,” pledging that MTN Ghana’s growth would continue to be tied to the progress of the country it serves.
