The Paramount Chief of Buipe, Buipewura Jinapor II who doubles as the vice president of Ghana’s National House of Chiefs, has expressed deep concern over the alarming rise of Hepatitis B infections in the Buipe area of the Central Gonja District, warning that the situation demands urgent attention from health authorities.
The chief made the disclosure on Friday, March 13, 2026, during his traditional palace session at Buipe, where he addressed a gathering of sub-chiefs and queenmothers. Buipewura Jinapor II revealed that information available to him indicates that Central Gonja specifically Buipe records the highest number of Hepatitis B cases in the entire Savannah Region, and that the disease has already claimed several lives, including those of chiefs within the district.
“The sickness has taken several lives, including chiefs in this district,” Buipewura said, stressing the need for immediate and collective action to stem the spread of the viral infection.
Buipewura Jinapor II disclosed that he plans to formally invite health professionals to visit Buipe to sensitize and educate the local population about Hepatitis B, its causes, modes of transmission, prevention, and available treatment options.
The occasion coincided with a courtesy call on Buipewura by students of the Damongo Nurses and Midwives Training School, led by Mr. Lukman, a tutor and Dean of Students at the institution. The delegation, comprising members of the school’s Students Representative Council, paid the visit as part of their engagement with traditional leaders in the region.
Seizing on the presence of the health professional, Buipewura invited Mr. Lukman to briefly enlighten the palace on the nature of Hepatitis B, what it is, how it spreads, and how people can protect themselves. Mr. Lukman obliged, providing an informative overview to the assembled chiefs and queenmothers.
Buipewura Jinapor II used the occasion to admonish his sub-chiefs and queenmothers to take all recommended precautionary measures seriously and to spread awareness within their communities. He also issued a direct appeal to the Ghana Health Service to take decisive action to address the high prevalence of Hepatitis B in the Central Gonja District.
