Oil Money Under the Spotlight: PIAC Probes Savannah Projects, Targets Road Accountability Next

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has expressed satisfaction with key projects funded by petroleum revenues in the Savannah Region, following an inspection tour aimed at ensuring accountability and value for money.

The inspection covered office furniture at the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council, as well as the official bungalows of the Regional Police Commander and the Deputy Commander.

These projects, according to the Committee, have been completed and are currently in use.

Speaking to the media, the leader of the delegation, Zambaga Rufai Samimu, who also serves as Chairman of the Public Affairs and Communication Sub-Committee of PIAC, noted that the team was impressed with the state of the projects inspected so far.

“We have inspected a number of projects, including the furniture at the RCC which were provided through oil revenues. We also inspected the bungalows of the Police Commander and his deputy. These projects have been completed and are in use,” he stated.

He revealed that the Committee’s next focus will be the ongoing Salaga-Mankango road project, which is scheduled for inspection on Friday.

Mr. Samimu explained that PIAC will collaborate with the regional office of the Ghana Highways Authority to engage the contractor responsible for the road project, ensuring that all necessary technical and operational questions are addressed.

He emphasized that the exercise forms part of PIAC’s constitutional mandate to independently monitor and evaluate how petroleum revenues are utilized across the country.

“We are satisfied so far with what we have seen. A comprehensive report will be compiled and presented to the Committee, after which recommendations will be forwarded to government on the way forward,” he added.

Mr. Samimu further clarified that while PIAC plays a critical oversight role in tracking the use of oil revenues, it does not determine how projects are distributed across the country, as that responsibility falls outside its mandate.

The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of Ghana’s petroleum resources, pledging to continue its monitoring efforts diligently and objectively.
