Central Gonja: Concerned Youth of Mpaha Junction Intensify Opposition to Re-awarding of Road Contract to Maripoma Ltd.

‎The Concerned Youth of Domeabra (Mpaha Junction) in the Central Gonja District of Savannah Region have intensify their opposition to plans to re-award the long-delayed Domeabra–Mpaha road project to Maripoma Ltd., revealing a history of abandonment and renewed agitation to demand accountability from authorities.

‎At a press conference held on Wednesday May 13, 2026, the group stated that the road contract was initially awarded to Maripoma Ltd. in 2012. However, according to them, the contractor abandoned the project in 2016 following the exit of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government from power.

‎They further explained that with the assumption of office by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, the contract came under review and was subsequently cleared for the contractor to resume work. Despite this second opportunity, the group lamented that more than five years on, the project remains uncompleted, with the contractor allegedly abandoning the site once again.

‎The release, which was read by Mbonwura K. Tijani, Secretary to the Concerned Youth of Domeabra (Mpaha Junction), described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that the prolonged delay has brought untold hardship to residents who depend heavily on the road for economic activities, access to healthcare, and education.

‎They also revealed that the press conference marks the beginning of a series of actions aimed at ensuring their concerns are addressed. According to the group, plans are already underway to formally petition key stakeholders, including the Central Gonja District Assembly, the Savannah Regional Minister, the Ghana Highways Authority, and the Minister for Roads and Highways.

‎“We are not ending here. This is just the beginning of our agitation,” the group emphasized, signaling their readiness to intensify advocacy until the project is reassigned to a more competent contractor.

‎The Concerned Youth of Domeabra (Mpaha Junction) further pointed to what they described as a troubling track record of Maripoma Ltd., alleging that the company has a pattern of abandoning and delaying road projects across the country. They cited recent confrontations between the contractor and the Minister of Roads and Highways as further evidence of ongoing performance challenges.

‎They argued that such a record reinforces their firm opposition to any attempt to return the Domeabra–Mpaha road project to the company, especially as the project is expected to transition under the Ghana Highways Authority.

‎Reiterating the importance of the road, the group noted that its completion is critical to improving livelihoods, boosting trade, and ensuring essential services reach the people of Domeabra (Mpaha Junction) and surrounding communities.

‎They are therefore calling on government to reject Maripoma Ltd.’s bid, reassign the project to a more reliable contractor, enforce strict timelines, and prioritize accountability to safeguard public resources.

‎While acknowledging Maripoma Ltd.’s status as a major construction firm in Ghana, the group maintained that size and reputation should not outweigh performance and delivery, insisting that the people of Domeabra (Mpaha Junction) deserve better.
