A joint security and safety operation has successfully cleared hawkers who had taken over the pedestrian walkway at the Damongo main lorry station, following earlier concerns raised about the safety of schoolchildren and pedestrians.
The exercise, which took place on 20th February, 2026, involved officials from the Savannah Regional Road Safety Authority, NADMO, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), and the Savannah Regional Fire Service.
The operation comes months after Spear FM reported on 3rd December, 2025, about the growing encroachment on the walkway by traders and hawkers. The report highlighted how the space meant for pedestrians had been turned into an open market, forcing schoolchildren and other commuters to walk on the busy road alongside moving vehicles.
At the time, parents and residents expressed serious concern about the safety risks, as students in uniform were often seen navigating through commercial vehicles, tricycles, and other traffic just to get through the lorry station.
During the recent exercise, officials moved in to evacuate the hawkers and traders occupying the walkway, restoring the space for its intended purpose as a safe passage for pedestrians.
Authorities say the move is part of efforts to improve safety within the busy transport hub and prevent potential accidents involving schoolchildren and other road users.
Residents and commuters who witnessed the exercise commended the agencies involved and praised Spear FM for bringing attention to the issue.
Many are hopeful that the authorities will continue to monitor the area to prevent traders from returning to the walkway and ensure that the space remains safe for pedestrians, particularly students who pass through the station daily.
The Damongo lorry station remains one of the busiest areas in the Savannah Regional capital, making the enforcement of safety measures crucial for both commuters and drivers.
