Yaa-Naa Abubakari II Passes-on, laid to rest According to Dagbon Tradition

The Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, has been laid to rest at Katina, the royal mausoleum reserved for Yaa-Naas, following the completion of sacred traditional rites prescribed by the customs of the Dagbon Kingdom.

This is according to a statement issued today, Monday 13th July 2026, by Andani Royal Family, the Royal Gate of the late King.

The burial comes hours after the King’s passing was formally proclaimed through traditional gunfire, royal drumming, and the ceremonial activities of the Sapashini (warriors) at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

In its statement, the Royal Family described the late monarch as a revered father, a wise leader, and a custodian of Dagbon’s rich heritage, saying his wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to peace and unity will forever be remembered.

The family says the late Yaa-Naa’s leadership leaves behind an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations of Dagombas and all who admired his dedication to preserving the Kingdom’s traditions while promoting reconciliation and harmony.

The Royal Family has called on the faithful to remember the late King in their prayers, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, illuminate his grave, and grant him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. They have also appealed for strength, patience, and comfort for the Royal Family, the Chiefs and Elders of Dagbon, and the entire Kingdom during this profound moment in Dagbon’s history.

With the burial now completed, the remaining customary funeral rites will take place, to be supervised by the newly installed Kampakuya-Naa, who serves as Regent of Dagbon until a successor is selected and enskinned in accordance with the Kingdom’s customs and traditions.

The passing of Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II has drawn an outpouring of grief across northern Ghana and beyond, with many remembering his reign for its humility, reconciliation, and unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of Dagbon.
