The West Gonja Municipal Assembly has once again failed to elect a Presiding Member, prolonging the leadership vacuum that has persisted since February 2026.
At a crucial meeting held on Friday, May 8, 2026, the Assembly made another attempt to resolve the impasse but ended in yet another deadlock.
The election was conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, supervised by its Returning Officer, Abdul Rauf Adams, who officially declared the results before the Assembly.
Out of a total of 20 Assembly Members, only 16 members were present and voted.
Results of the Election:
Hon. Mohammed Mumuni secured 10 votes, representing 62.5%
Hon. Abraham Bartholomew Ananpansah obtained 6 votes, representing 37.5%
Despite leading the polls, neither candidate met the constitutional requirement of securing a two-thirds majority, which in this case translates to at least 14 votes out of 20 members.
As a result, the election remains inconclusive.
What Happens Next?
The Returning Officer, Mr. Abdul Rauf Adams, announced that in line with the law and Assembly procedures:
Fresh nominations will be opened
Both current contenders are automatically disqualified
However, the Assembly is yet to determine when the nomination process will be reopened, leaving uncertainty over the next steps in resolving the leadership impasse.
This development marks yet another setback for the Assembly, deepening concerns over governance and effective decision-making in the municipality.
The continued inability to elect a Presiding Member underscores ongoing divisions within the Assembly, as stakeholders now look forward to a new round of nominations that could finally break the deadlock.
