Information reaching Spear FM indicates that passengers travelling from Tamale to Damongo using the GPRTU Executive Transport Station at the Tamale Main Taxi Rank are now paying GH¢60, representing a GH¢10 increase from the previous fare of GH¢50.
The development, which came to light in the early hours of Monday, August 10, 2026, prompted the Spear FM News Team to conduct checks to establish whether the reported increase had been implemented across transport stations serving the Tamale–Damongo route.
A ticket obtained from the Executive Transport Station at the Tamale Main Taxi Rank confirmed that the fare from Tamale to Damongo has indeed been increased from GH¢50 to GH¢60.
However, further checks by the Spear FM News Team at the Damongo GPRTU station indicate that there has been no corresponding increase in transport fares.
Passengers travelling from Damongo to Tamale are still paying GH¢50, while fares from Damongo to other destinations also remain unchanged, pending any official decision by the local GPRTU.
Sources close to the Damongo GPRTU have, however, confirmed the increase at the Executive Transport Station in Tamale, stressing that the fare adjustment is currently not a uniform increase across the two terminals.
According to the sources, while Tamale to Damongo now costs GH¢60 at the Executive Transport Station, the reverse journey from Damongo to Tamale remains GH¢50.
The sources further disclosed that transport operators in Damongo have been mounting pressure on the local GPRTU to review fares upwards, citing the recent increases in fuel prices and the rising cost of vehicle spare parts and maintenance.
Despite these concerns, the Damongo GPRTU is yet to officially announce an increase in transport fares, with discussions on the matter yet to be concluded.
Meanwhile, there are indications that the GPRTU at the national level is also considering a possible upward adjustment in transport fares.
Sources say discussions are ongoing over a proposed increase of up to 20 percent, although the proposal is reportedly still at the negotiation stage, with the GPRTU engaging relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, before any final decision is taken.
The proposed adjustment, if approved, could have implications for commuters across the country, particularly at a time when transport operators continue to point to increased operational costs as a major challenge to their businesses.
For now, however, passengers using the Damongo GPRTU terminal are advised that there has been no official increase in fares, and the existing fare of GH¢50 between Damongo and Tamale remains in effect.
