Spear FM Story Yields Results: Sawla-Tuna-Kalba DCE Awards Contract for Kong D/A JHS Renovation

Impactful community journalism has delivered swift results for pupils of Kong D/A Junior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, as the District Assembly has awarded a contract for the renovation of the school’s dilapidated classroom block.

Kipo Issahaku, Personal Aid to the District Chief Executive of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, confirmed on Sunday, July 5, 2026 that the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly, under the leadership of DCE Hon. Sinkina Saaka, has engaged a contractor who is currently on site working to restore the school facility and provide a better learning environment for pupils.

The development follows a Spear FM news report that exposed the dire conditions at Kong D/A JHS, where a windstorm had torn off the roof of the school’s only classroom block, leaving teachers and pupils studying under an exposed structure. The story highlighted escalating student dropouts, severe teacher shortages, the absence of doors and windows, and deep cracks running through the school’s walls, a conditions that community leaders described as a violation of children’s basic right to education.

The swift response by the DCE underscores the power of community journalism in holding duty bearers accountable and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. Spear FM remains committed to bringing critical issues to the fore giving voice to the voiceless and ensuring that the plight of communities like Kong does not go unheard.

Spear FM commends the DCE for STK Hon. Sinkina Saaka for his prompt intervention and urges continued attention to the remaining challenges at Kong, including teacher shortages, lack of potable water, and the overcrowded conditions at Kong D/A Primary School.
