The Savannah Regional Police Command, with support from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, has arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the robbery of two Mobile Money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market in the Savannah Region, in which GH¢430,000 was reportedly stolen.
The robbery occurred on June 29, 2026, when four armed men allegedly attacked the vendors and fired sporadically before making away with the money.
According to the police, the suspects were armed with two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun and an AK-47 assault rifle.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to assist the Savannah Regional Police Command with investigations.
After weeks of surveillance, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, together with the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Kintampo Divisional Police Command, arrested one of the suspects, identified as Yacouba Oumar, at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23, 2026.
Police said during interrogation, Oumar admitted his involvement in the robbery and named three alleged accomplices as Yakubu Seidu alias Baba, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya alias Addo, and Abduli Buipe alias Addo.
He reportedly further told investigators that the gang had been contracted by a cattle trader at the Buipe market identified as Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, to carry out the robbery.
The investigation subsequently led police to Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa, where some of the alleged members of the syndicate and weapons believed to have been used in the robbery were reportedly located.
The police said an exchange of gunfire occurred between officers and the suspects during the operation, resulting in the deaths of Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu.
Their bodies have been deposited at a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police said they subsequently retrieved one pump-action gun with five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun believed to have been used during the Buipe robbery.
Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations. The Police Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, as well as other persons suspected to be connected to the robbery.
The investigation remains ongoing.
