‎NDC Thank You Tour: Asiedu Nketiah Praises Yagbonwura for Peaceful 2024 Elections, Donates to Education Fund and Calls for Party Unity In Damongo

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has commended the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, and the people of Gonja for their role in ensuring peace and stability during the 2024 general elections.

‎He made the remarks on Friday, 15th May, 2026, during the party’s nationwide “Thank You Tour” to the Savannah Region, where he visited the Jakpa Palace in Damongo and later addressed a town hall meeting at the Damongo Community Centre.

‎At the Jakpa Palace, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah conveyed greetings from President John Dramani Mahama and the national executive of the NDC, describing his reception as warm and deeply welcoming, noting that visits to the palace always feel like returning home.

‎He expressed gratitude to the Yagbonwura and his elders for their hospitality and leadership, stressing that traditional authorities played a crucial role in maintaining calm during a tense electoral period.

‎ “I want to thank the Overlord and the people of Gonja for their exceptional contribution to peace and the successful conduct of the 2024 elections,” he said.

‎Mr. Asiedu Nketiah explained that the 2024 elections were surrounded by fear and uncertainty, with concerns about possible conflict and tension. However, he noted that the intervention of traditional leaders helped safeguard peace across the country.

‎He further praised the people of the Savannah Region for their contribution to a peaceful electoral process, adding that the outcome helped protect and enhance the image of northern Ghana.

‎The NDC National Chairman also referenced the presidential election outcome, including the concession by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia after it became clear he had lost the race, describing it as an important step that helped preserve national unity and prevent post-election tensions.

‎He also used the occasion to express support for education initiatives being championed by the Yagbonwura in the Gonja Kingdom, announcing a personal donation of GHS 50,000 towards the Bii-Kunuto Educational Fund to support human capital development in the area.

‎After the palace engagement, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah proceeded to the Damongo Community Centre, where he met constituency executives, polling station officers, and grassroots party members as part of the “Thank You Tour.”

‎At the town hall meeting, he expressed appreciation to supporters for their contribution to the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections but did not hide his concern over internal divisions within the Damongo Constituency branch of the party.

‎He noted that despite his earlier efforts to reconcile factions in the constituency ahead of the elections, unity was not achieved, unlike other constituencies where similar challenges were resolved successfully.

‎Mr. Asiedu Nketiah cautioned that such divisions could affect the constituency’s ability to access opportunities and development benefits, particularly in political environments where constituencies aligned with the governing side often enjoy greater advantages.

‎He stressed that Damongo, which is currently represented in Parliament by an opposition Member of Parliament, must urgently prioritize reconciliation and internal unity to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure and future electoral prospects.

‎ “When we came here before the elections, we tried to reconcile the party in Damongo, but unfortunately it did not succeed,” he said.

‎He urged members of the party to close ranks and work together, emphasizing that unity remains critical to sustaining political gains and building stronger electoral fortunes in the future.

‎The “Thank You Tour” continues across the country as the NDC leadership engages traditional authorities and party supporters following the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections.
