Heavy-duty Trucks Bared From Damongo Cemetery Road Over Collapsed Culvert

The Assembly Member for Hangaline Electoral Area with support from the West Gonja Municipal Assembly has moved to stop heavy-duty vehicles from hauling gravel along the Galamsey Junction–Damongo Main Cemetery road, following the collapse of a culvert that has left the stretch in a deteriorating and increasingly dangerous condition.

The Assembly Member for Hangaline Electoral Area, Hon. Gorden Kumatey, raised the alarm after personally inspecting the affected road and observing that continued heavy-duty traffic on the stretch could worsen the damage and cut off the road entirely, putting residents and motorists at risk.

Hon. Kumatey said he immediately reported his findings to the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Works Engineer, and the Regional Urban Roads Director for guidance and possible intervention.

On the directive of the MCE, he returned to the site on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, together with the Municipal Works Engineer and a Deputy Coordinating Director for a joint assessment. The team agreed that immediate steps were needed to bar heavy-duty trucks from using the road for gravel hauling, given the fragile state of the collapsed culvert and the surrounding road surface.

The Assembly says it will work with the Urban Roads Department to identify and implement a lasting solution to the problem as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Hon. Kumatey is appealing to operators of heavy-duty vehicles, particularly those in the gravel business, to cooperate with the Assembly’s directive and avoid the affected stretch until further notice. He is also urging motorists and other road users to exercise caution and consider alternative routes while remedial works are pending.

The Assembly Member stressed that the measure is not meant to disrupt legitimate economic activity, but is a preventive step to protect lives, property and the road infrastructure.
