The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu Galus, has undertaken a series of high-level courtesy calls on traditional authorities across the Savannah Region as part of efforts to secure the Tamale-Damongo Water Supply Project.
The engagements, which formed part of a broader stakeholder consultation initiative, are centered on the introduction of the project’s Resettlement Action Plan commonly referred to as the RAP.
The RAP is designed to identify and document properties that may be affected by construction activities, including farms, residences, and lands. It will also define pipeline routes and establish compensation and resettlement frameworks for persons displaced or impacted by the project.
The delegation, led by the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited Hon. Adam Mutawakilu and accompanied by the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Bi-awurbi, and other key technical partners, arrived in Damongo on Monday, June 15, 2026, for the stakeholder consultative engagements marking the beginning of both the consultation process and the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the project.
At the Jakpa Palace, Hon. Mutawakilu paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, and his council of elders. In his address, the Managing Director stressed the importance of transparency, collaboration, and active community participation, reaffirming that the project is being undertaken in the interest of the people. He also recalled President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to ensure that Damongo and its environs would have access to clean, potable drinking water before the end of his tenure, noting that significant progress had already been made toward that commitment.
Hon. Mutawakilu further disclosed that funding for the project has now been fully allocated, with the Minister for Finance having signed all necessary documents for the release of funds.
On production capacity, he indicated that the project would generate approximately 135,000 cubic metres of water per day which is enough to supply both Tamale and Damongo. He expressed gratitude to President Mahama for redeeming his pledge and assured residents that the perennial water challenges in Damongo and surrounding communities would soon be a thing of the past.
To strengthen communication with local communities, the Managing Director also introduced two coordinators who will serve as focal persons for stakeholder engagement, public education, and sensitization activities across the project area.
The Yagbonwura welcomed the initiative, applauded the delegation, and offered prayers for the success of the project, while assuring GWCL of the full support of the Gonja Traditional Council.
As part of the engagement tour, the Managing Director also visited the Paramount Chief of the Busunu Traditional Area, Busunuwura Jonokpowu Monasa I, and expressed appreciation for the allocation of land for the construction of a booster station, a critical component of the water supply infrastructure.
He further called on the Paramount Chief of the Yapei Traditional Area, Yapeiwura A.B.T. Zakaria, as well as the Damongowura and the Kusawguwura at their respective palaces, to further consolidate community support for the project.

The Tamale-Damongo Water Supply Project is expected to provide sustainable pipe-borne water services to thousands of households in Damongo and surrounding communities, where residents have long endured persistent water shortages, particularly during the dry season.
The project is also anticipated to support economic development and contribute to improved public health outcomes across the Savannah Region.
