Political Social Media Banter Turns Violent in Damongo; NDC and NPP Youth Trade Attacks

A social media argument between two politically active young men in Damongo has degenerated into physical violence, raising fresh concerns about growing political intolerance in the West Gonja Municipality.

The incident involves Fuzzy Sorku, also known as Fuzzy JJ Rawlings or Panic, a young man identified with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Alhaji Barony who hails from Daboya, a popular TikToker known for his support of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Damongo Member of Parliament, Abu Jinapor.

According to information gathered by Spear FM, the trouble started when Alhaji Barony used his TikTok page to criticize Adam Mutawakilu Garlus, the Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited, who was the NDC parliamentary candidate for the Damongo Constituency in the 2024 general elections for renting a bus to convey some Damongo youth to Tamale for a musical concert staged by musician Fancy Gadam. The criticism drew a sharp response from Fuzzy Sorku, a known NDC sympathizer and supporter of Garlus on social media. The exchange quickly escalated into personal attacks and insults between the two men on the TikTok platform.

The matter did not end on social media. Fuzzy Sorku allegedly traced to Alhaji Barony’s residence and broke into his room, where he physically assaulted him. Alhaji Barony, fearing for his safety, fled his room and sought refuge in a nearby provision shop. However, this did not deter Fuzzy Sorku, who pursued him into the shop and continued to beat him.

Alhaji Barony is currently receiving treatment at a health facility following the assault. The matter has since been reported to the Police, and investigations are currently underway.

The attack provoked a strong reaction from NPP youth in Damongo. On Saturday morning, a group led by one Alhaji Rambo mobilized and marched to Fuzzy Sorku’s residence with the intention of retaliating. Fuzzy Sorku, who had reportedly been tipped off, had already left his home before the group arrived.

In a video that has since circulated, Alhaji Rambo issued a stern warning to Fuzzy Sorku, calling on his family to counsel Fuzzy and bring him to order. Alhaji Rambo revealed that the NPP youth had previously restrained themselves on account of the respect they hold for the Sorku family, and alleged that this is not the first time Fuzzy Sorku has physically assaulted members of their party. He cited a past incident in which Fuzzy Sorku allegedly mobilized a group that attacked one Mr. Seidu Arimiyaw and seized a motorbike from him.

Alhaji Rambo and the NPP youth vowed that they would no longer remain silent in the face of continued attacks and intimidation against their members.

In the latest development, Alhaji Rambo and a number of the NPP men who accompanied him to Fuzzy Sorku’s residence including one Bakari and Jaga have been arrested by the Damongo police. Their arrest follows accusations that they broke into Fuzzy Sorku’s house without his permission. NDC leadership in Damongo had earlier threatened to ensure the police acted against Alhaji Rambo and his group over the incident.

It remains unclear at the time of this report whether Fuzzy Sorku, who allegedly initiated the original assault on Alhaji Barony, has also been picked up by the police as investigations continue.

Spear FM wishes to appeal to the youth of the Savannah Region to use social media responsibly. The station is deeply concerned about the rising tide of political intolerance in Damongo, where supporters of the NDC and NPP increasingly treat each other as enemies rather than political opponents in a healthy democratic environment.

It is equally worrying that many young people in the region appear to have anchored their entire futures to their political affiliations, abandoning productive careers in trades, health, education, and other professions in pursuit of political appointments. This misplaced priority, combined with the weaponization of social media, is creating dangerous fault lines within communities.

Spear FM calls on political party leaders, traditional authorities, and security agencies to act decisively to curb political hooliganism before it causes irreparable harm to the peace and unity of Damongo and the wider Savannah Region.
