More than thirty people, mostly women and children, sustained varying degrees of injury on Thursday 20th August 2026 evening when a tractor conveying them from a farm somersaulted near the Damongo axle weighing bridge.
The victims were returning from a “by-day” farming trip, where they had gone to pluck groundnuts on a farm belonging to one Andemu, when the accident occurred.
Speaking to Spear FM, the tractor operator explained that his steering wheel locked as he was ascending the slope near the weighing bridge. He said he attempted to steer the tractor to the edge of the road to avoid hitting pedestrians walking there, but as the tractor veered towards a gutter, he tried to regain control, a move that caused it to somersault, throwing off and dragging some of the passengers along the road.
However, some of the victims have disputed this account. They told Spear FM the operator was over-speeding and ignored their pleas to slow down before the accident occurred. One victim said she believes the tractor’s brakes failed, and that this was the actual cause of the crash.

The injured were rushed to St. Ann’s Catholic Hospital, where they are receiving treatment at the emergency ward. Spear FM’s news team, which visited the facility, observed that several victims, including young children, sustained bruises to their arms, legs, and heads, while others had deep cuts. A number of victims are also complaining of pains in the chest and waist area.
As at the time of filing this report, no fatalities had been recorded.
