Savannah Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana, popularly known as Prof. Kalamonia, has officially filed his nomination to seek another term in office, pledging to consolidate party unity and strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking after filing his nomination at the party’s regional office in Damongo on Friday, July 17, Prof. Kalamonia said his decision was influenced by persistent calls from party members across all levels, including polling station executives, the youth, religious leaders, and traditional authorities.
He underscored the need for cohesion within the party, noting briefly that “unity is the key to victory,” and urged members to rally behind a shared vision.
Reviewing his tenure, Prof. Kalamonia pointed to what he described as steady progress in the party’s parliamentary representation in the Savannah Region. From a single seat when he assumed office, he said the party increased its tally to three seats prior to the 2024 general elections.
He recalled that the 2024 elections were particularly challenging for the NPP nationwide, describing the outcome as a “political tsunami.” Despite this, he maintained that the party’s ability to retain the Damongo seat was a significant achievement, especially given the region’s political dynamics.
Drawing comparisons with other parts of the country, he noted that the NPP failed to secure parliamentary representation in four of Ghana’s sixteen regions. He made the point that, unlike those regions, Savannah still managed to hold onto a seat—even though it is the home region of John Dramani Mahama, who was then the opposition leader and is now President of the Republic.
“That tells you the level of work we did here,” he said.
Prof. Kalamonia also acknowledged that the opposition’s success in the 2024 elections was largely due to internal unity, indicating that the NPP must take lessons from that experience as it prepares for the future.
As part of his re-election bid, he revealed that he has sought the blessings of key traditional and religious leaders, including the Wasipewura, the Chief Imam of Wasipe, and other community leaders within the Wasipe Traditional Area at Daboya in the North Gonja District.
On development, the chairman emphasized that leadership is about impact rather than formal qualifications. He stated that despite not being highly educated, his vision has contributed to meaningful initiatives in the region.
He cited the establishment of a technical and vocational institution and his role in facilitating the Savannah College of Education as examples of his commitment to improving education and skills development.
Prof. Kalamonia further highlighted efforts to strengthen the party’s internal structures, including support for communication and research directorates and the empowerment of the youth wing.
He reiterated his commitment to grassroots engagement, noting that his close relationship with party members across constituencies has been central to his leadership.
With internal elections approaching, he expressed confidence in securing another mandate, calling on party faithful to remain united and focused on reclaiming more parliamentary seats in the 2028 general elections.
