The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Lawyer Salisu Be-awurbi, has directed Environmental Health Officers, popularly known as “Samasama,” across the Savannah Region to prosecute anyone who violates sanitation laws in any district or municipality in the Savannah Region.
Speaking when he joined the West Gonja Municipality for the National Clean-Up Exercise, the Minister said residents must take personal responsibility for sanitation in their communities. He used a local proverb that a billy goat does not bark at a stranger while the dog is around to stress that residents should not sit back and wait for security personnel and other stakeholders to clean their gutters and surroundings only on national clean-up days.
Hon. Be-awurbi said environmental health workers have been given the mandate to take to court anyone found keeping their surroundings dirty.
He also assured residents that no political or traditional authority would be allowed to intervene to protect offenders from prosecution.

The clean-up exercise, held nationwide on Saturday, July 11, 2026, on the directive of the President, was in response to the recent nationwide flood aftermath. The West Gonja Municipality exercise brought together security personnel, students, government officials, traders, and other stakeholders.
