The Savannah Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress has issued a strongly-worded statement condemning what it describes as selective outrage, double standards, and politically motivated propaganda by the New Patriotic Party over recent violent incidents in Damongo.
The NDC’s response follows public statements by NPP Regional Chairman Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana, popularly known as Kalamonia, and a subsequent joint press conference by the NPP Regional and Damongo Constituency Secretariats, in which the opposition party condemned an alleged attack on one of their members by a well-known NDC activist.
But the NDC says the NPP’s moral posturing rings hollow. The party points out that while the NPP rushed to condemn the alleged attack on their member, they maintained a conspicuous silence when reports emerged of a retaliatory attack and destruction of property allegedly carried out against the NDC activist by an NPP Constituency Vice Chairman aspirant, Alhassan Fusheini, also known as Rambo.
The NDC further highlights what it calls a glaring contradiction within the NPP’s own leadership with the Regional Chairman claiming to be awaiting verification of facts, while the Regional Secretariat had already convened a press conference and assigned political blame to the NDC.
In a significant development, the statement reveals that Alhaji Alhassan Fusheini and an accomplice have already been found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction and sentenced accordingly a fact the NDC says exposes the NPP’s one-sided narrative.
The NDC also called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate all related incidents, including a video in which NPP member Yussif Abdul-Hakim is allegedly seen threatening the life of President John Dramani Mahama, a matter the party says must not be treated lightly.
The statement welcomed the intervention of His Royal Majesty the Yagbonwura, who has called for calm and urged political actors to resolve their differences amicably.
While reaffirming its commitment to peace and the rule of law, the NDC warned that such commitment should not be mistaken for weakness, adding that the party stands fully prepared to defend the rights and dignity of its members through all lawful and constitutional means.
