Savannah Region: Police Foil Robbery Attempt at Buipe; Two Suspects Gunned Down, Others Arrested

The Savannah Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has foiled an attempted robbery at Buipe and arrested two suspects, following a series of intelligence-led operations.

Addressing the media on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Deputy Savannah Regional Commander, ACP Raynolds Manteaw, disclosed that the incident began on April 26, 2026, when a police patrol team on duty along the Yapei–Tamale road encountered three armed men.

According to him, the suspects opened fire on an armoured police vehicle, prompting officers to return fire.

The suspects subsequently fled into a nearby bush. A locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge were retrieved from the scene.

He explained that subsequent intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects, identified as Osman Abdulai, also known as “Landan,” and Umar Seidu, in Tamale on April 27, 2026.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted they were on their way to carry out a robbery at Yapei but were forced to abandon the plan after being involved in a motor accident. They further confessed to participating in the earlier attack on the police patrol team and  mentioned their accomplices as Babuga, Kilor, and Malami.

The suspects later led police to a location along the Yapei–Salaga road, where officers retrieved a single-barrel shotgun with a shortened barrel and five rounds of ammunition.

ACP Manteaw further revealed that in a follow-up operation on April 29, 2026, police acted on intelligence provided by Osman Abdulai to track down the remaining gang members at Buipe.

At a guest house, two suspects were located. One of them, identified as Babuga, reportedly attacked police officers with a machete during an attempt to arrest him. In the ensuing confrontation, both suspects sustained gunshot wounds. They were rushed to the Buipe District Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

Their bodies have since been deposited at St. Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for preservation and autopsy.

The Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and dismantle the robbery network operating within the area.

Suspect Osman Abdulai who’s in police custody is assisting in investigations and will be arraigned before court to be remanded back to the police for further investigations

The Savannah Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining law and order and urged residents to volunteer credible information to support ongoing operations.
