West Gonja Municipal: Sor Communities Cut Off as River Overflows, Floods Only Access Road

Communities of Sor No. 1, Sor No. 2, and Sor No. 3 in the West Gonja Municipality have been cut off from Damongo for nearly two weeks following floods caused by the overflow of the Sor River.

The Assembly Member for Sor Electoral Area, Hon. Seidu A. Fuseini, popularly known as Hon. Fuzzy, confirmed that the river burst its banks about two weeks ago, submerging the only road linking the three communities to the municipal capital, Damongo.

Hon. Fuzzy told Spear FM that he documented the situation by taking photographs of the damaged road and forwarded them to the Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, but says no action has been taken so far.

The flooding has paralysed life in the affected communities. Teachers are unable to cross the river to schools, farmers cannot access their farmlands, and most critically, emergency services have been cut off entirely. The Assembly Member warned that an ambulance cannot reach the communities in the event of a medical emergency, putting pregnant women and other vulnerable residents at serious risk.

“If there is any health emergency or if there is the need for an ambulance to go to these communities to pick a pregnant woman to hospital, an ambulance cannot go there,” Hon. Fuzzy stated.

The Assembly Member is calling on the MCE to urgently engage the District Road Improvement Program, DRIP, Coordinator to deploy the DRIP equipment to the area to restore the road to a motorable state before the situation worsens.
