The West Gonja Municipal Assembly has today 30th April 2026 conducted elections for the position of Presiding Member, with 18 assembly members casting their votes in the exercise.

Results from the first round of voting showed that incumbent Mohammed Mumuni polled 11 votes, representing 55 percent of total votes cast, while his contender Ananpansa Abraham garnered 7 votes, representing 35 percent.
However, neither candidate met the constitutional threshold required to be declared Presiding Member. A candidate must secure a minimum of 13 votes representing at least two-thirds of the total assembly membership to qualify for the position.

The Electoral Commission’s Municipal Director confirmed that standing electoral rules provide for an immediate second round of voting where no candidate achieves the required threshold in the first ballot.

At the time of filing this report, preparations were underway for the second round of voting to be conducted immediately, as both candidates remain in contention for the position.
More details to follow as the situation develops.
